What is Telegram Wallet?
Telegram Wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet integrated into the Telegram messenger as a bot and mini-app. It opens directly in the messenger interface and does not require a separate application installation. The wallet is managed by an independent development team (The Open Platform), not Telegram itself, and is built around the TON blockchain (The Open Network), historically associated with the messenger.
How it works
The product essentially combines two wallets with different key storage models:
- Main wallet (custodial). Private keys are stored by the service operator. Users only need to activate the bot — registration takes about a minute, and if access to the account is lost, funds can be recovered. Instant transfers to other Telegram users are supported without commission within the service.
- TON Space (non-custodial). A "wallet within a wallet" where private keys are controlled by the user. When created, a 24-word seed phrase is generated that must be saved: if lost, access to funds cannot be recovered. TON Space provides access to decentralized applications (dApps) and NFTs in the TON ecosystem.
Inside the wallet, you can buy and sell cryptocurrency, exchange between assets (TON, BTC, USDT, etc.), use a P2P market for transactions between users, and withdraw to external blockchain addresses. Commissions are charged for withdrawals and network operations, although internal transfers between users are free.
Benefits for users
- No need to install a separate application — the wallet is accessible where you already communicate.
- Simple start: the custodial version does not require working with seed phrases.
- Instant free cryptocurrency transfers to Telegram contacts.
- Ability to switch to self-custody through TON Space as your experience grows.
Drawbacks and risks
- In custodial mode, funds are effectively controlled by the service operator — this is a third-party risk.
- Feature availability depends on the country: in some jurisdictions, certain modes are limited or disabled.
- In non-custodial mode, full responsibility lies with the user: losing a seed phrase means irreversible loss of funds.
- The legal status of cryptocurrency transactions varies by country, and the assets themselves are highly volatile.
Important to remember
Before using such services, clarify the legal regime of crypto assets in your country, enable two-factor authentication for your account, and avoid storing large amounts in custodial mode if you are not prepared to trust them to a third party.
