What is Polkadot?
Polkadot is a platform that connects multiple blockchains into a single network. The central relay chain provides security and consensus, while connected parachains—specialized blockchains—freely exchange data and assets. DOT is the platform's native coin.
How it works
The network operates on a Proof-of-Stake variant with nomination: DOT holders support validators with their stakes and share rewards with them. DOT is also used to govern the network through on-chain voting and for projects to access platform resources. Updates are implemented without hard forks—the network updates itself based on voting outcomes.
Pros and cons
- Pros: advanced on-chain governance system, shared security for all connected networks, staking rewards.
- Cons: architectural complexity for users, competition with other ecosystems, inflationary token emission.
