JSC «Qizilqumsement» (ticker QZSM) showed a sharp deterioration in financial performance. Revenue from product sales declined nearly by half, net profit — more than 12-fold compared to the same period last year.

Performance dynamics

  • net revenue — decline from 658.7 million to 361.8 million (in reporting units);
  • cost of sold products — from 501.5 million to 250.7 million;
  • net profit — from 70.1 million to 5.6 million.

The profit reduction was disproportionately deeper than the revenue decline: while sales fell by approximately 45%, the bottom line decreased by nearly 92%.

What this ratio shows

Cost of goods sold declined almost as much as revenue — meaning production costs are not the issue.

The gap is explained by cost structure: as volumes decline, fixed costs — depreciation, equipment maintenance, administrative expenses — are spread over lower output. In capital-intensive production such as cement manufacturing, this effect is particularly pronounced.

Interest expenses on attracted financing may have been an additional factor.

Context: Market grows while indicators fall

The situation appears contradictory against the overall market conditions. The construction sector of the republic shows growth — according to first-half data, the industry added approximately 13%, and home sales increased by about 18% since the beginning of the year.

That is, the company's declining results are not explained by market contraction. Rather, it likely reflects market share loss, price competition, or internal operational issues.

Connection to recent credit transaction

In September, company shareholders approved a loan of $50 million from Uzpromstroybank at 11% per annum in foreign currency.

The purpose of funds then raised questions: the first tranche was directed to replenish working capital — raw material purchases, energy resources, current payroll and tax payments. The second was intended to repay a credit line at another bank.

Current financial statements explain this need: with profits of only several million, the company has limited internal sources for financing operational activities.

As security for the transaction, the plant's production facilities and assets of an affiliated company were pledged.

What investors should consider

The combination of factors requires careful attention when evaluating the issuer:

  • sharp decline in profitability in a growing market;
  • foreign currency loan at rates above market for corporate borrowers;
  • funds attracted for operational needs rather than development;
  • substantial portion of production assets pledged as collateral.
